How did World WarII affected Singapore?

  • Why was Singapore called the "Impregnable Fortress?"

Singapore was protected by 20+ big cannons. It was also protected by the 2 battle cruisers which were known to be unbeatable.  The British had 137,000 soldiers, but the Japanese beat them, in terms of both quality and quantity. The British then called Singapore as the impregnable fortress.

  • What kind of defence did Singapore have before WorldWarII ?
Singapore before worldwarII had a rather weak defence, but it was strong enough to protect singapore.

Lieutenant General Arthur Percival's command was unable to stop the Japanese, he then on January 31 withdrew from the peninsula to the island of Singapore. Destroying the causeway between the island and Johore, he prepared to keep away from Japanese landings. To defend Singapore, Percival deployed three brigades of Major General Gordon Bennett's 8th Australian division to hold the western part of the island.

  • Why was Singapore considered well-defended for possible

 enemy attacks?

The British thought that the Japanese would coming to attack Singapore by seas, therefore the british placed all cannons for the attack at seas. But the Japanese came in for war riding bicycles.

  • Three Reasons Why The British Failed To Stop The Japanese Attack On Singapore.

  • Reason One.
The British thought that Singapore could not be attacked from the land, because the Johor's jungles were difficult territory for enemy's soilders to move in for attack. Therefore, British did not put in much effort to defend the northern of Singapore.
The naval base, underground bunkers, big guns and natural protections of the Johor's jungles, led the British to believe that Singapore was as strong as a fortress.

  • Reason Two.

The Japanese make a fake attack.

The Japanese in Johor made intense bombings at Changi. Then the Japanese attacked Pulau Ubin on 7 February 1942. Leading the british to think that the Japanese intends to invade Singapore from the northeast, the British then moved their defence supplies from the northwest to the northeast. Which was exactly what the Japanese wanted the British to do

  • Reason Three.

The Japanese entering for attack at a different place asumed by the British.

Since the narrowest point of the Johor Strait was at the northwest of Singapore, it was easy for the Japanese to cross the Strait there. But the British had stationed almost all their war needs at the northeast of Singapore. Which then made it easy for the  Japanese to send divisions of soldiers across from Johor to Singapore. The soldiers, who had to defend that large area of space, opened fire at the Japanese but could not stop them.
